Law Student Programs
Every year, Stein Monast opens its doors to a select group of law students with a view to providing them with a personalized experience, the opportunity to perform a wide variety of rewarding tasks, and a better chance of being hired as an associate following the successful completion of their articling period, in accordance with the needs of the firm and the interests of the law student.
The articling program is structured on a rotating basis to give law students a chance to work with each of the firm’s practice groups and help them discover which sector of law they are most interested in. Students will have a chance to work alongside our professionals and be directly involved in files, benefiting from one-on-one mentoring by experienced lawyers.
Stein Monast provides law students with an opportunity to work full-time over the summer preceding their Bar school training.
Summer program and articling students will be assigned a cross-section of duties, including researching, drafting proceedings and contracts, and preparing closing documents, to name a few. When the opportunity arises, summer students and articling students are also included in various learning situations, such as examinations on discovery, meetings with clients, closing sessions, friendly settlement conferences and trials. However, only articling students will be asked to make representations before the Court, including the presentation of incidental motions.
Summer program and articling students have no billable hour objectives, since the focus is on the variety of tasks they will perform and on improving their skills rather than on the number of hours to be billed. It is by producing quality work and demonstrating professionalism and enthusiasm that articling students will be able to make their mark and become indispensable to the firm.
All summer program and articling student positions are remunerated. This remuneration compares favourably with that of other major firms in Quebec City.
Onboarding and Training
Stein Monast has created a special onboarding and training program for summer and articling students so they can integrate into our team quickly and seamlessly.
Mentoring
All our lawyers understand the importance of our mentoring program and, accordingly, summer program and articling students will receive one-on-one support to bolster their integration in the professional life of the firm. The mentorship of a summer student or supervision of an articling student is assumed by a partner who will guide them and oversee their work. The time dedicated to this role is highly valued and recognized as necessary for the continuity of the firm.
More specifically, mentors and articling supervisors must regularly monitor the student’s workload. They will review the student’s work, communicate any positive or constructive feedback they may receive, and ensure that all work is revised by the lawyer who assigned the mandate, all in an effort to help the student reach his or her professional goals. The mentor will make sure that the student is assigned work by several lawyers from various practice groups to ensure the student receives well-rounded training. Finally, the articling supervisor will prepare a full written report on the student’s performance, which will be submitted to the partner in charge of the firm’s professional committee.
Available Positions: Summer Program and Articling Program
The next recruitment period will take place in February and March of 2022. During this time, we will be looking for summer students and articling students to fill the following positions:
2023 Summer Students – 2024 Articling Students: Four (4) positions
The summer preceding their entrance at the École du Barreau, the future articling student will have the opportunity to work as a law student at the firm.
2023 Articling Students: Two (2) positions
The 2023 articling position does not offer a law summer student position.
Please note that we do not recruit first-year students, even for summer positions.
Applications and Interviews
The first step in our recruitment process involves an in-depth analysis of applications submitted by students. A preselection process is carried out by a committee comprised of lawyers from the firm to identify which students will be called to an interview.
The application must at a minimum contain a cover letter, a curriculum vitae, and the student’s most recent university transcript. Applicants are encouraged to include any other documents that might allow the committee members to get to know them better (i.e., letter of reference, publication, transcript from another academic program, etc.).
In accordance with the Entente de recrutement 2021-2022, there shall be no interviews before March 14, 2022.
Students who have been pre-selected will be invited to a preliminary interview, usually led by two lawyers from the firm. This meeting will allow us to establish a personal connection with you and expand on the contents of your application. If several candidates stand out, a second interview may be scheduled.
In accordance with the Entente de recrutement 2021-2022, no job offers shall be made before Friday, March 25, 2022, at 9:00 a.m.
